Certain people are more susceptible to heat, whether it was due to a particular body type or state of health. Such a population needs to be especially aware of their protection during the summer.
Of course, we must all follow the basic methods of protection against heat. For example, we should dress properly, stay well hydrated, and avoid the sun during the hottest hours of the day. However, people who are more exposed to heat should maximize the use of these methods.
People who are more exposed to heat:
- Children under 5 years of age
- People over 65 years of age
- People suffering from chronic diseases
- People who exercise or do outdoor work
People who are more exposed to heat
Children, especially very young children, are particularly vulnerable to heat. This is because the younger body loses fluid faster. So children dry faster. Likewise, children produce heat faster because of their size. So you need to protect them from direct sunlight when the temperature rises, as well as look at possible overexertion during the physical activity they do.
The elderly are another extremely vulnerable group. This is because the center that regulates body temperature is located in the hypothalamus, the area of the brain that regulates the temperature inside the body. However, this function slows down as a person ages.
Also, members of this group are not able to detect their thirst as easily as before. That’s why they tend to get more body heat. In addition, if the environment is humid, it prevents more sweating and increases the risk of heat stroke.
People with high blood pressure
Excessive heat dilates the arteries and leads to dehydration. Both are negative things for people with high blood pressure. So talk to your doctor about how you can adjust your medication during hot weather.
It is very common for heat to lower blood pressure. Thus, the effect of using conventional drugs can lead to insufficient levels. For this reason, you should see your doctor to check that they are not causing any unpleasant surprises.
People with heart disease and obesity
High temperatures also affect the health of the cardiovascular system. This effect is, of course, more severe in people who already have problems with it in the past. This is because heart failure limits the body’s ability to cool down. As you can see, it causes heat overload. It is also common for patients with heart disease to use diuretic medications, so they are constantly removing water from their bodies and this reduces their ability to sweat. For this reason, they are particularly prone to dehydration.
It is also difficult for obese people to cool their bodies. They usually sweat a lot at high temperatures. They easily lose fluids and mineral salts and thus often suffer from dehydration. Likewise, when an overweight person has a higher amount of fat in his body, it changes his thermoregulation. So they are more likely to get heat stroke.
Athletes and people doing outdoor work
People who engage in physical activities outdoors are much more prone to heat. In them, direct exposure to sunlight increases the effect of high temperatures. Thus, exposure to the sun and engaging in activity doubles their risk of dehydration.
All of these groups need to use adequate protection and possibly limit activities to those times of the day when the sun is not so strong. They also need to stay hydrated at all times and drink twice as much fluid as they would normally drink.
