As a child, everything seemed to be much simpler and more fun. But as we grow into adulthood, the course of life makes us forget our dreams. Over time, we drift into a vicious circle of comfort and habit, making ourselves routine slaves. We lose sight of all that is important to us for a happy and fulfilling life.
However, each of us has the power to decide our own state of mind and course of life.
Happiness, joy and motivation
Matthieu Ricard, the happiest man in the world, defines happiness as “the well-being that arises when the mind is exceptionally balanced and calm”. Ricard notes that anyone can find true happiness. It is found through wisdom, altruism, and compassion, and aside from things that poison the mind such as anger, greed, and ignorance.
Similarly, in his book The Skill of Happiness, the Dalai Lama argues that people themselves create the conditions that sabotage joy and happiness. This is due to the mind’s tendency to negativity, emotional reactions, or an inability to appreciate and utilize internal resources.
Just as people have the power to cause their own suffering, they also have the ability to bring about joy. According to the Dalai Lama, the key to happiness is found inside. It includes attitudes and reactions in our daily lives.
Thus, the basic element in achieving happiness is motivation.
Ricard also believes that man has the ability to influence his own emotional state if he so desires; the emergence of a sense of happiness, joy, and contentment. But if our goal is altruistic and sincere, we are much more likely to fully enjoy each day and infect this with other people as well.
What should you do to be happier?
Michael Fordyce was one of the pioneers of positive psychology. Positive psychology is about methods and activities that aim to nurture positive emotions, actions, and cognitions.
He created a program called “The 14 Basic Principles of Happiness”. The goal of this program is for people to apply all the main features of happy people in their lives so that they themselves become happy.
These 14 principles are as follows:
- Be more active and stay busy
- Be more social
- Be productive in some significant job
- Be systematic and plan ahead
- Avoid worrying
- Reduces expectations and efforts
- Develops optimistic and positive thoughts
- Live in the present moment
- Works on a healthy personality
- Develops an outward-looking and social personality
- To be yourself
- Eliminates negative emotions and problems
- Close friendships are the most important sources of happiness
- Appreciate happiness
In addition to the principles of the program, there are other factors that need to be considered.
It must be borne in mind that depression can be caused by illness, thyroid problems, stress, chemical or mental disorders, medication, or even menopause.
It is also necessary to dedicate time to exercise as its effects on the body are endless. Taking care of your body is one of the key things to maintain joy and motivation in life.
Envy arises when too much weight is placed on material things. As a result, it is impossible to have peace of mind. In fact, envy ruins any human relationship and destroys the mind and health.
For this reason, it is important to nurture emotions that produce joy and peace of mind. Examples are knowledge and experience. This is how our focus is on our true values.
Enjoy positive emotions
All emotions have a positive function because they help us feel ourselves.
However, positive emotions such as forgiveness, hope, generosity, and gratitude help neutralize negative emotions. They not only bring pleasure but also enhance our personal, intellectual, physical, mental and social abilities.
Accepting painful experiences
Negative emotions cannot be avoided as everyone experiences losses, mistakes and failures in life. But happiness is not the same as the complete absence of suffering, it depends on the balance of positive and negative emotions.
Accepting painful experiences strengthens self-control and mental resilience that allow us to grow despite tragedies.
Achieving joy and motivation that brings us closer to happiness requires willpower, fortitude, and work. But a happy life means living more, and that’s why it’s worth working for.
